Welcome back Nelsonville-York Students! Our staff is so excited to see you and to begin another wonderful year of learning, friendships, and wonderful experiences.
We are under way and beginning to get into our "school" groove. Written Education Plans have been sent out, so if you have not already, please be sure to check that your child has "permission" to receive gifted services, sign on the designated lines, and return to the Elementary School office. This will be a great way to start our year - with teachers and parents all aware and onboard for an amazing and challenging year of learning.
Junior High students were challenged to create the tallest tower they could using spaghetti, marshmallows (big and small), and gummie bears. It was quite the batlle, but in the end it was determined that "having a well thought out base is critical to the height your tower can reach!"
Regional Scholars is a Leadership Conference held at Camp Akita each year for gifted high school juniors. If you, or your child, is a gifted junior at NYHS please check out the website below. Camp Akita includes leadership and "team" building activities. In addition, the students attend a college fair! This year there will be 20 colleges represented.
Regional Scholars 2017 was a SUCCESS! Thank you to those that attended. It was a fun-filled and very busy few days. Over 70 students attended from this region's high schools. It was a wonderful opportunity for the scholars to come together and make new friendships. The college fair included 20 colleges - both big and small. It was a priviledge to watch these students begin their first steps toward answering..."What are my plans after highschool?"
Our third/fourth grade has worked hard this year learning abour our seasons. As an extension, they explored the science behind why, how, when , etc our leaves change colors.
6th grade students chose an animal on the Endangered Species list and researched its habitat, its specific characteristics, how it became endangered, and some suggestions to solve the issue. Each wrote a 5 paragraph essay and then made his/her animal out of clay. The papers and artifacts were awesome!
Students complete characters from their creative stories! They will finish up and complete them after Winter Break. 12/16/2015
The 5th Graders have had so much fun comparing/contrasting the novel and movie: The Indian in the Cupboard. Check out their Iroquiois long houses!
